Comment: Sergei Meets Ludmilla. The former Czechoslovakia (CSSR) as a member of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (RGW) also covered its need for large diesel locomotives by turning to the Soviet Union. The class 781 (originally T 6799.1) was placed into service here as a locomotive type parallel to the DR class 120 (the V 200 of East Germany). However, the locomotive was given a Russian male nickname: "Sergei". "He" often alternated in cross-border long distance service with "his" contemporary "Ludmilla" from East Germany.

Cars to go with this locomotive in domestic and cross-border use are available in the 15919 display.

Prototypical double-heading for the "Rollende Landstrae / Rolling Road" with two road numbers.

Comment: The high performance class 1012 electric locomotive was specially designed for the Austrian railroad network. The mountainous terrain with sharp curves and steep grades but also long straight routes such as in the Inn Valley or on the West Railroad / Westbahn pose great challenges in the design of locomotives for the Austrian Federal Railways. The class 1012 locomotive was originally intended for use as an express locomotive with a maximum speed of 230 km/h / 144 mph and was supposed to replace the class 1044. It was used for several years in regular scheduled service as general-purpose motive power with an output of 6.4 megawatts / 8,582 horsepower for express passenger and freight service on the point of trains for the "Rollende Landstrasse" / "Rolling Road" on the Innsbruck - Brenner line. Technically, the class 1012 was designed to haul trains of 660 metric tons on .5% grades at 220 km/h / 138 mph and of 600 metric tons on 2.8% grades at 100 km/h / 63 mph. It was designed to be able to haul express passenger trains on flat terrain and heavy freight trains in mountainous territory with double-heading equally well. The locomotive strongly resembled the SBB's class 460 in the design of its superstructure with the side walls of fluted sheet steel and the engineer's cab elements of fiberglass components. The mechanical part of the locomotive came from Simmering-Graz-Pauker, and the electric part was delivered by ELIN, Siemens, and ABB. The top management of the Austrian Federal Railways changed while the first three locomotives were being built, and new regulations were effected for announcing requests to tender bids in the EU region. Initially, the BB no longer wanted to take delivery of the locomotives as a result, but an agreement was finally reached and the locomotives were accepted by the BB in 1997. These locomotives were stationed in Innsbruck during their entire service life. The class 1016/1116 Taurus locomotives soon represented a more economical alternative, and the class 1012 locomotives with their attractive shape remained a splinter class.

The locomotive is available in two versions: Road no. 1012 002, item no. 12169 Road no. 1012 003, item no. 12170

DB cl 18.5 Steam Loco w/Tender

Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 18.5 express locomotive. Bavarian class S 3/6 from the series delivered to the German State Railroad. Class with a straight engineer's cab and large smoke deflectors. Version for late Era III.

There is a close coupling between the locomotive and the tender. The valve gear and wheel treads are dark nickel plated. Length over the buffers 134 mm / 5-1/4".

Comment: A Beauty in Black. The class S 3/6 locomotive is among the particularly successful designs for steam locomotives. These units turned in excellent results not only in Bavarian, but were also used in premium long distance service, sometimes beyond the borders of Germany. Due to the good results with the locomotive later designated as the class 18.4, the German State Railroad Company ordered additional locomotives in the years 1923 to 1930 from Maffei and Henschel. With this series the most noticeable external feature was engineer's cab. It no longer had a streamlined arrow shape to it; it now had a straight front. Along with the now longer appearing boiler, this cab gave the locomotive a totally different look. In addition, different modifications allowed the performance to be increased slightly. The locomotive, now designated as the class 18.5, proved to be the ideal motive power for premium long distance service. In particular, there was a preference to use the class 18.5 locomotives as motive power for the "Rheingold". Locomotives for this use were provided with a red-white-red band around the smoke stack. The consistently clean shiny brass boiler rings were further witness of the high demands made in terms of looks on the Rheingold flagship trains. The last unit of the class 18.5 was not retired until 1966. Several museum S 3/6 locomotives remain preserved, among them an operational unit at the Bavarian Railroad Museum in Nrdlingen.

The motor and the gear drive are built into the locomotive. 5 axles powered. Traction tires. There is a close coupling between the locomotive and the tender. This is a finely detailed model. Length over the buffers 119 mm / 4-11/16".

Comment: From the G 10 to the 057. The good experience with the Prussian class T 16.1 (later class 94.5-17) freight tank locomotive with five coupled axles prompted the Royal Prussian Railroad Administration to order a steam locomotive with this wheel arrangement and with a tender. The firm Henschel in Kassel developed such a locomotive that was designated as the class G 10 on the Prussian Railroad. Following thoughts about standardization, a Garbe design boiler was chosen; this design had already given extremely good results on the class P 8 (later class 38.10-40). With this boiler, the G 10 reached a maximum speed of 60 km/h / 38 mph with an indicated performance of 1,100 horsepower. The first locomotives were delivered to the Prussian State Railroad in 1910. By 1925, there were a total of 2,589 units of the G 10, which were integrated into the German State Railroad Company's (DRG) motive power roster as the class 57.10-35. During repairs several locomotives were equipped with the similar boilers from the class 38, which however differed in the number of steam and sand domes. After 1945, the roster of class 57.10-35 locomotives was greatly decimated. In 1950, there were only 391 units on the DB, on the DR (East Germany) approximately 125 units that were all assembled in the DR's Schwerin District. A handful of DB locomotives survived into Era IV as the class 057. Today, there are still 2 original class 57 locomotives and 6 locomotives of similar design preserved by other European railroads.

T12576 - DB cl 042 Steam Loco w/Tender  DB - Germany

DB cl 042 Steam Loco w/Tender

Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 042 fast freight locomotive. 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. Built starting in 1936 for the German State Railroad Company. Rebuilt in 1957 to oil firing. Use: Fast freight trains. Era IV.

Model: The tender body is constructed of die-cast metal. The locomotive has an NEM digital connector. The locomotive has a 5-pole motor with a flywheel, in the tender. 4 axles powered. Traction tires. There is a close coupling between the locomotive and the tender. These detail parts are included and can be installed on the locomotive: a front coupler, rail guards, and brakeman's steps. Length over the buffers 150 mm / 5-7/8".

Comment: A Tune-Up for the 41. The class 41 locomotives were bought starting in 1936 and showed increasing evidence of metal fatigue in the boilers as early as the Fifties. Therefore, they were equipped with new boilers starting in 1957; these new boilers were identical with those used on the class 03.10. As part of this rebuilding, 40 units were converted to oil firing and were equipped with the characteristic oil tender. The rebuilding increased the performance slightly. In the long run, despite good results the concept of the oil-fired steam locomotive could not compete with the better efficiency levels demonstrated by diesel locomotives.

Brakeman's steps, rail guards, and a front coupler are included and can be installed on the locomotive

Comment: Modern Diesel for Many Uses. The German Federal Railroad (DB) began to place the class V 100 diesel hydraulic general-purpose locomotives into service in 1958. These locomotives were very progressive designs for their time and had a performance of 1,100 horsepower. A more powerful version with 1,350 horsepower followed starting in 1962 as the class V 100.20. These 12.3 meter / 40 foot 4-1/4 inch long locomotives reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h / 63 mph. Since the change to computer numbers in 1968, the first production series, the V 100.10, is now the class 211; the second series, the V 100.20, is now the class 212. These locomotives are very multifaceted and can be used in passenger as well as freight service. They were instrumental in replacing large numbers of steam locomotives on the DB motive power roster.

Commuter cars contemporary to these locomotives are the new "Silberlinge / Silver Coins", item nos. 15848, 15849, and 15850.

Comment: A Small Locomotive for Big Uses. The best known small locomotive and also the diesel locomotive built in the largest numbers in German was the Kf II, a diesel hydraulic small locomotive with around 125 horsepower. These locomotives were authorized for 30 to 50 km/h / 19 to 31 mph, depending on the brake system. Approximately 800 new locomotives for the DB were built in addition to about 1,000 locomotives of this class from the Forties. Around 1976, 1,100 units were in service on the DB; they had been re-designated as the classes 322, 323, and 324. On the DR (East Germany) approximately 250 K II and Kf II were in service as the classes 100.1 and 100.8, which became the class 310 on the DB AG. In addition to the state railroad's small locomotives, there are a large number of other units that were delivered directly to private railroads and industrial operations both domestically and abroad. The total number off the Kf II and its siblings is estimated at 2,500 units. Many of these proven small locomotives are still in service today as second hand locomotives.
