The Super Pacific – An Adventure for the Senses

Express locomotive 01 1053 was built in by Schwartzkopff in Wildau 1940 in a series of 55 high-performance locomotives. The super Pacific 01.10 was derived from the class 01 with the addition of an internal cylinder, a larger tender, streamlined fairing, and other tune-up steps. All of these locomotives were used in express service on the DB, where the heavy streamlining was removed and a still more powerful, new boiler was used. With 2,350 horsepower and a top speed of 140 km/h or 87.5 mph, this locomotive did not take a back seat even to the new diesel locomotives. Our prototype locomotive was moved around on the DB several times: It came from Hannover via Hildesheim, Paderborn, Offenburg, Kassel and Bebra to Osanabrück. In 1967, it finally was given the computer number 011 053-2 in Rheine, under which it served almost a year on the Emsland route to Norddeich.

Entertaining “Apple Excursions” for Your Layout

The International Apfelpfeil Organization (IAO) set up the so-called “Apple Trips” in the 1970s, enjoyable trips across Europe. In 1976 the IAO acquired the famous “Rheingold”vista dome cars and other cars from the TEE rolling stock from the German Federal Railroad. These striking cars in their friendly “Apfelpfeil” paint scheme were a brand name for traveling with comfort and animation for several years at affordable prices. In the face of increasing competition from lump sum price trips with charter planes, this concept could not be continued economically later on. In 1979 the IAO had to stop operations and declare bankruptcy. The special cars were brought by other travel organizers and have been partially rebuilt and are still in service today.

Tank car (reproduction of 4621.3 originally made from 1969-72)
Perfect add-on for 47906:

Prototype: Heavy petroleum oil tank car, used on the German Federal Railroad (DB). Four-axle railroad maintenance car with company lettering.

Model: Separately applied platform and ladder on the end of the car. Separately applied steps on the sides and integrated step inserts in the tank car cladding. Length over the buffers 13.1 cm / 5-3/16”.

Large quantities of heavy heating oil were needed for the numerous, existing, oil-fired steam locomotives. The German Federal Railroad ordered these 4-axle, high-capacity tank cars for this purpose. The good insulation of the inner tank and the cladding with riveted metal sheeting for protection made it possible to transport the oil even during the colder part of the year without the fear that the oil would become viscous. These cars ensured seamless train operations by supplying the refueling stations and maintenance facilities all year around with heavy heating oil.
