Only a few hours later, it was thrilling both young and old in stations and along the rail lines. Both sides are decorated differently and this locomotive describes the fascination of the Märklin brand. Soon you can also experience the effect of this Märklin locomotive in your little world of model railroading.

Additional information about the prototype:

"Pop Cars" of the DB At the end of the Sixties, the German Federal Railroad had a new color concept developed, because up to that time locomotives and cars were painted exclusively in single colors. Now a paint scheme was to have a friendlier, more modern effect with a colorful window band and beneath it a light gray stripe. The main colors from which to choose for the window band were dark blue, dark green, orange, and crimson. This color palette was supplemented by a decorative stripe in the same color above the window area at the roof edge as well as directly above the lower edge of the car. From 1970 to 1974, the DB experimented with the new colors. One hundred forty five express train passenger cars were delivered new or repainted in "Pop" colors. All of the roofs on the cars gleamed in umbra gray (RAL 7022), the area under the windows was pebble gray (RAL 7032), and the underframe jet-black (RAL 9005). The experimental character of the "Pop" colors was revealed in the variety of colors for the window bands. Blood orange (RAL 2002) was selected as an attention-getter for 26 cars in 1st class and 1st/2nd class (Aüm 202, Aüm 203, ABüm 223, ABüm 225, and ABwümz 227). A cobalt blue window band (RAL 5013) served as a distinguishing feature on 85 cars in 2nd class (among others Büm 232, Büm 233, Büm 234, Bwümz 237, Bcüm 243, Bcümk 255, and BDüms 273). Seventeen dining cars (WRümh 132, WRüge 152, WLABümh 174, and BRbuümz 285) were given a crimson window band (RAL 3004). There was no dominant unity on the type Bcüm 243 slumber coaches: Two ran with a window band in blue lilac (RAL 4005) and three with red-violet (RAL 4002). Chrome oxide green (RAL 6020) was used initially on a short experimental train, yet it was finally to serve as the identification color for baggage cars (Düm 902). Twelve cars ran in this paint scheme. Pure "Pop Car" trains were seldom achieved due to the small number of repainted cars. These colorful cars were seen mainly in express trains from Bremen, Osnabruck, Norddeich, and Dortmund to Munich and in the routing Basle – Hamburg. The best candidates for pure train compositions were however, the DC trains introduced starting in the summer of 1973. They were short-lived and included only a few cars.

"Silberling" / "Silver Coin"
Starting in 1959, commuter cars were built in large numbers and left their mark on entire generations – the so-called "Silberlinge" / "Silver Coins". A characteristic feature of these cars was the extravagant exterior appearance: The car body consisted of unpainted stainless steel and below the window band, a peacock's eye pattern was ground into the sides. Double entries in the area of a third and two thirds of the car body length speeded passengers boarding and departing. The 2nd class cars had three open seating areas separated by the center entries, were upholstered with red artificial leather, and had 2+2 seating. The paint scheme "ocean blue / beige" introduced in 1974 changed the cars only a little. Only the previously black frame now gleamed in ocean blue.

"MERKUR"

The “Merkur” stood for a mystique of the German Economic Miracle period. The precursors of the West German Economic Miracle became evident
soon after the establishment of the German Federal Railroad (DB). The management at the DB recognized early on that the executives of the
economy would require a reliable transportation network. The worst of the damage from World War II had hardly been removed, and as early as 1951, they were preparing a train network to connect the important West German urban centers with fast trains. The so-called “F-Zug” network had its roots in the express powered rail car network of the prewar period, but it had a significant difference. While the German State Railroad Company (DRG) had set up the network of “Flying Trains” before World War II focused on Berlin, the main routes of the “F-Zug” network ran from North to South due to the internal German border. Fast train connections were set up between Hamburg, Bremen, the Rhine-Ruhr area and Cologne, Frankfurt (Main), Stuttgart, Nürnberg, Munich, and Basle. They ran mornings and back in the evening in each case with few stops. This was planned to make it possible to do an external business appointment in one day. Naturally, this did not work for long distances such as Hamburg – Munich. In the style of the “FD” designation customary before the war, the train class was now called “F-Züge” / “F Trains”, whereby the F stood for “Fern” / “Long Distance”. In addition to the regular fare price, a passenger also had to have an “F” surcharge ticket for the trip. Starting in 1952/53, the train routes were given impressive names: The pair of trains F 4/3 (Hamburg-Altona – Frankfurt/Main – Hamburg-Altona) were thus given the name “Merkur”. With “Blauer Enzian” / “Blue Gentian”, “Gambrinus”, “Helvetia”, “Senator”, “Roland” and ”Domspatz“ – just to name a few – the ”F“ trains bore other illustrious names as the pride of the new German Federal Railroad. With the name ”Merkur“ (Mercury) as the ”messenger of the gods“, in the Roman religion the god of traders and thieves, the DB was paying its respects to the many commercial cities located on the route. Starting in the summer of 1952, the long-distance train F 3/4 ran as ”Merkur“ between Frankfurt/Main and Hamburg-Altona with intermediate stops in Wiesbaden (F 3)/Mainz (F4), Koblenz, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Hamm, Münster, Osnabrück, and Bremen. In 1954, its run was even lengthened from Frankfurt to Stuttgart with a stop in Heidelberg. Starting in the summer of 1957, the ”Merkur“ no longer served Dortmund and Hamm but took the more direct way between Münster and Essen via Haltern and
Gelsenkirchen. As a rule, a class 03.10 steam locomotive initially pulled the train in the section Frankfurt – Hamburg. Starting in the summer of
1957, the section Stuttgart – Frankfurt was dropped and one of the new V 200 units from Hamm now powered the train on its entire run. As an ”F“ train from the beginning, the Merkur ran up to the end of the ”F“ train era in the summer schedule of 1971. Then, it was transformed into an InterCity.

L26270  --  Era VI CLass HG 4/4 Cog Wheel Steam Locomotive

DFB Class HG 4/4 Cog Wheel Steam Locomotive, Road Number 704
Cogwheel locomotives have a long and distinctive history at LGB. There was thus no question that the class HG 4/4 cogwheel steam locomotive with its highly interesting driving gear would be realized as a model, namely with fine metal construction. Driven by a powerful DC motor, this model can be run on grades like the original due to the cogwheel mechanism. The cogwheel mechanism was modelled true to the original: On the one hand, it is – like the real life prototype – only in operation on the rack line, on the other it turns opposite of the driving wheels of course, but with double the rpm to do this.

Prototype: SLM (Swiss Locomotive and Machinery Company Winterthur) initially delivered five locomotives with four coupled axles in 1924 for operation on the cogwheel line Krong Pha (later Song Pha) – Da Lat, the railroad company Compagnie Génerale de Colonies Paris in Indochina, presently Vietnam. These were the class HG 4/4, with road numbers 701-705. In 1929, the Esslingen Machinery Company built two locomotives with road numbers 706 and 707 as reparations due because Germany lost World War I. They were done from SLM plans. In 1930, came two more units from SLM with the road numbers 708 and 709. After World War II, not all nine cogwheel locomotives were still in existence and starting in 1947 the remaining units ran as road numbers VHX-40.302, 303, 304, 306, and 308 on the South Vietnamese State Railroad. Road numbers 304, 306, and 308 survived the Vietnam War in more or less operational condition and the last runs took place in 1975. As part of the reactivation of the Furka Mountain Line, the two class HG 4/4 units, road numbers 40.304 (former 704) and 40.308 (former 708), were brought back to Switzerland in addition to four former class HG 3/4 units of the Furka Oberalp Railroad (FO). This was done in 1990 by the association "Furka Mountain Line Steam Railroad" (DFB) in an unprecedented promotion "Back to Switzerland". The rest of former road number 706 such as the frame with the wheelsets and the cogwheel drive with the cylinder blocks did not reach Switzerland until 1998 and then as a source of spare parts. Starting in 2006, the faithful restoration finally began of the two class HG 4/4 units, road numbers 704 and 708. This was done by qualified technical specialists at the DFB shops in Chur. The worn out frames had to be rebuilt utilizing still usable parts, which were finally available at the end of 2011. During the restoration, preference was given to road number 704 with the installation of the cylinder blocks as well as the new draft gear and buffer equipment (MGB/RhB norms), whereby the left high-pressure cylinder as well as the cylinder and slide valve cover had to be cast again. At the same time, the old riveted boiler was repaired extensively, while several parts had to be replaced on the firebox. The DFB shops in Uzwil, newly acquired in 2013, produced a new copper firebox as well as a new smoke box with a smoke box tube wall. The vapor collection box, backpressure brake housing, water tanks, cab, coalbunker, and most of the appliances were also newly built parts. Starting in July of 2018, work had progressed to the point that the first test and operation runs were done. Since the class HG 4/4 had never been used in Switzerland, first approval was required with the drafting of extensive calculations and safety verification. Finally, on October 16 came successful approval by the Federal Transportation Department (BAV) and on December 17, 2018 the DFB was able to receive final, unlimited operating approval from the BAV. The official maiden run took place on June 25, 2019 and it has enriched the DFB motive power since then. In the meantime, intensive work is being done in Uzwil on the sibling locomotive, road number 708, so that it can also be put into operation as soon as possible.

Model: This is a model of the class HG 4/4 cogwheel steam locomotive, road number 704, of the DFB (Furka Mountain Line Steam Railroad). It is a finely detailed model with heavy metal construction including many separately applied details. All driving wheelsets are driven via side rods by a powerful motor. Genuine cogwheel for operation with the LGB 10210 cogwheel rack is possible. The doors to the cab and the smoke box door can be opened. The paint scheme and lettering are prototypical for Era VI, or as the locomotive looks today. The locomotive is equipped with an mfx/DCC decoder with many light and sound functions such as headlights, cab lighting, running sounds, whistle sound activated by a reed switch, and much more. The running sounds will also work in analog operation. The locomotive has a built-in smoke generator with steam exhaust synchronized to the wheels as well as cylinder steam, steam at the exhaust for the vacuum brakes, and steam exhaust at the whistle when the latter is activated. Length over the buffers 40 cm / 15-3/4".

  • The total quantity - together with item number 26271 - is limited worldwide to only 399 pieces!

L26816  --  DRG Class 99.22 Steam Locomotive

Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive, Road Number 99 221
At the end of the Twenties, narrow gauge steam locomotives were derived from the standard design principles contained in the standardized DRG purchasing program for standard gauge steam locomotives. In 1930, Schwartzkopff delivered three units with five coupled driving axles as road numbers 99 221-223. They were now the most powerful narrow gauge locomotives on the DRG and it was thus no wonder that the road number 99 221, the first unit built, was duly honored in the photo-gray paint scheme. In 1944, road numbers 99 221 and 223 were drafted for war work in occupied Norway and remained there. Conversely, road number 99 222 is still in daily use on the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (HSB). The photo-gray paint scheme was used chiefly for builder's photographs after the first locomotive of a production run was built. The photo-gray paint scheme, consisting of washable lime paint, served to make basically black locomotives better to photograph. For the photographic technology of that time with black and white film or with emulsions on glass plates could still not capture the fine contrasts on a black locomotive. Using this method, the many lines and pipes as well as appliances on a locomotive's boiler could be made more visible.

Model: This is a model of the German State Railroad Company (DRG) narrow gauge steam locomotive, road number 99 221, in the photo gray paint scheme as originally delivered. This is the version with an older design boiler with a feed water heater. The paint and lettering are prototypical for Era II. Two powerful Bühler motors with ball bearings drive all five of the wheel sets. The locomotive has an mfx/DCC decoder with many sound and light functions, such as headlights that change over with the direction of travel, cab lighting, or separately controlled running gear lights. The locomotive has a whistle and bell activated by a reed switch. These sounds will also work in analog operation. The locomotive has a built-in smoke generator with steam exhaust synchronized to the wheels as well as cylinder steam. The locomotive has many separately applied details including a completely detailed cab as well as doors that can be opened. The dual headlights and the large ventilation installation on the cab roof are correct for the era. Length over the buffers 55 cm / 21-5/8".

Highlights:

  • First time in the DRG photo gray paint scheme.
